Prescribe and manage medications

The Medications section of the chart lists every active and past medication, and is where you add inpatient medications, write outpatient prescriptions, discontinue medications, and reconcile the medication list.

Before you start

You need prescribing permission (prescriber roles; Residents prescribe under supervision policy). Open the patient's chart, then go to Clinical → Medications in the chart rail.

Steps

  1. Review the medication list. Use the Sort and Group dropdowns and the search field (Search medication, indication, prescriber…) to organize it. A decision-support banner appears at the top if any interactions or guidance apply — click an affected medication to review.
  2. To add a medication order, click Add Medication. Search for the drug, then enter the Dose, route, frequency, and Instructions (Sig). Check the home-medication option if the patient reports taking it at home. Save to add it to the list.
  3. To write an outpatient prescription, click New Prescription. Search for and select the medication, enter the Sig (instructions to patient), and optionally choose a Pharmacy. Click Send e-Rx (with a pharmacy selected) or Save Rx (without one).
  4. To stop a medication, click it in the list and use Discontinue in the detail pane.
  5. To reconcile the medication list (for example, at admission or discharge), click Reconcile and work through each medication decision. Your decisions are saved to the record.
  6. Click Timeline to see medications plotted over time, and Print list for a paper copy.

Tips / Troubleshooting

  • The status line at the bottom of the prescription window tells you what is still needed — a medication and Sig are required; pharmacy is optional.
  • Medication searches use a built-in catalog; if a drug isn't found, ask your administrator about adding it.
