Place an order (labs, imaging, consults, and more)

Use the Orders section of the patient chart to place lab, radiology, pathology, consult, procedure, and referral orders, and to track and update their status.

Before you start

You need order-entry permission (prescriber roles and Residents; Interns place orders under supervision). Open the patient's chart, then go to Orders & Billing → Orders in the chart rail.

Steps

  1. Open the Orders (CPOE) page in the chart. The header shows the total order count and flags any outstanding STAT orders.
  2. Under Start new order, click a category tile: Lab, Radiology, Pathology, Consult, Procedure, or Referral. The New Order window opens.
  3. Pick what to order:
    • For lab, imaging, pathology, and procedure orders, search the catalog (for example, "Basic Metabolic Panel") and click the item. If it isn't listed, expand Can't find it? Enter custom text and type the order.
    • For a consult, choose the specialty from the Consulting service dropdown.
    • For a referral, type the destination in the Referral to field.
  4. Fill in the Indication — this is required.
  5. Set Priority (STAT, Urgent, ASAP, or Routine) and Frequency / timing (Once, Daily, PRN, and others).
  6. Click Add to Orders. The order is placed as active and appears in the list.
  7. Track orders with the status tabs — Active, Pending, Completed, Cancelled, All — and the category filter buttons. Click an order to open its detail pane.
  8. From the detail pane, use the status actions to move the order along: In progress, Complete, or Cancel. You can also cancel directly from the list by clicking the × that appears when you hover over an order.

Tips / Troubleshooting

  • The Add to Orders button stays disabled until you have both an order item and an indication.
  • Completed and cancelled orders cannot be cancelled again; they remain in their tabs for reference.
