Take your beds for the shift
My patients lists the beds assigned to you this shift. Everything else in kareNurse (tasks, handoff, verbal orders) uses this list as "your patients".
Steps
- Open My patients and choose your unit in the unit picker. kareNurse remembers it on this device.
- Click Take beds. The unit census opens with a checkbox on each bed.
- Tick the beds you are caring for. Untick a bed to release it.
- Click Done.
Taking a bed makes you its primary nurse for 12 hours and hands it over from whoever had it. A charge nurse can assign beds for other nurses.
On this page
- Orders to release: held orders on your beds (for example, transfer or post-op orders). They activate on admit or transfer, or you can release them here when the patient arrives.
- Verbal order: enter a verbal or telephone order. See Enter a verbal or telephone order.
- Refresh reloads the census.
End of shift
Click End shift and confirm. All your beds are released so the oncoming nurse can take them. Write your shift handoff first.
Tips / Troubleshooting
- "No admitted patients on this unit yet": admissions come from the ADT desk in karePractice. Check that you picked the right unit.
- "No beds taken yet": use Take beds.
- The bed count next to the unit shows when your shift assignment ends.
