Enter a verbal or telephone order
When a physician gives you an order in person or by phone, you enter it on the physician's behalf. The order takes effect immediately and goes to the physician to authenticate within 48 hours.
Before you start
The patient must be one of your patients (a bed assigned to you). Open My patients and click Verbal order on the patient.
Steps
- Choose how you received it: Verbal (in person) or Telephone.
- Confirm the ordering practitioner. It defaults to the admission's attending; if someone else gave the order, open Ordered by someone other than the attending? and enter them.
- Add each order line — Medication, Imaging, Nursing or Procedure — with its details and priority (Routine, Urgent or STAT).
- Read the complete order back to the practitioner and wait for them to confirm. Then tick I read back the complete order to the ordering practitioner and they confirmed it. The order cannot be entered until you do.
- Click Enter verbal order.
Safety checks
- CollabKare runs the same duplicate and allergy checks as a physician order.
- Duplicate: if the practitioner confirms, click Enter anyway (duplicate acknowledged).
- Allergy: enter the override reason the practitioner gave you, then click Enter with override.
What happens next
The order appears in the chart marked as a verbal or telephone order with who gave it, who received it and when. It sits in the practitioner's kareMD Cosign queue until they authenticate it.
Tips / Troubleshooting
- "Take a bed first": verbal orders are entered only on your assigned patients.
- "No attending on this admission": enter the ordering practitioner yourself.
- The Verbal order button appears only if your role includes verbal order entry.
